1688 vs Taobao: Which One Should You Source From?

They're both Alibaba Group marketplaces, but they serve different buyers. Here's the practical difference from someone who places orders on both every week.

1688: the wholesale market

• Prices are lower, especially as quantity goes up. Many listings show tiered pricing.
• Sellers expect business buyers. Communication is faster if you talk MOQ and repeat orders.
• The entire interface is in Chinese. No English version.
• Product pages often lack the polished photos Taobao has — you're buying on specs, not lifestyle shots.

Taobao: the retail market

• Better for single pieces, samples, and small test orders.
• Listings look nicer, reviews are more detailed, and it's easier to judge quality from the page.
• Prices are higher than 1688 for the same item, but the gap shrinks at low quantities.

My rule of thumb

• Need 1–5 pieces to test? Taobao.
• Ordering 20+ and want the real wholesale price? 1688.
• Somewhere in between? I check both — the same factory often sells on both platforms at different prices.

One more thing people miss: the cheapest listing isn't the cheapest order. A 1688 seller with a slightly higher unit price but honest packed dimensions and fast dispatch often costs you less overall once shipping is included.
